Job Interviews

"Doing something wrong?"
Dear Andrea:

I have been looking for a job in the accounting field for a month, yet nothing is happening. I get interviews, but no offers. I have an accent. Do you think that could be the problem?

    --Accountant with accent

Dear Accountant:

A month is not that much time, so relax. If you're not getting offers, several things could be happening:

    1. You're not presenting yourself well in the interview. You might look good on paper, but something you're saying or doing is giving the impression you're not the right person for the job. Practice your interview skills with someone who will give you honest feedback. Ask: How do you I come off? Do I seem like someone you'd want to hire? Why or why not? Video tape yourself.

    2. You're exploring the wrong jobs--ones you're either over- or under- qualified for. Before you go to an interview, ask questions. What qualifications does the job require? What does the ideal candidate look like? If it's not a good fit, don't interview just for the sake of interviewing.

    3. People are turned off by your accent. Perhaps they cannot understand you when you talk. If your accent if extremely heavy, consider going to a speech therapist who specializes in accent reduction.
