"Talk about promotion"

Dear Andrea:

I work for a pretty good Fortune 500 company where people just don't quit. Advancement opportunities only occur about once every five years. Once you wait your turn and it doesn't work out, you really feel stuck. Others are faced with a similar predicament around the country. Please advise.

    --Stuck

Dear Stuck:

Have you talked to your manager about this? That's the first place I'd start. Assuming you have regular appraisals, you should have a good idea of where you stand, if you're being considered for a promotion and why or why not. If you're not in the running, find out where you're lacking or why management doesn't see you as the next up and comer.

The process in which your company promotes might need an overhaul. Perhaps you can champion the idea of reviewing it if this is a bigger problem.

You might also talk to your boss about how you can expand your role, not necessarily your title. If a promotion is important to you though, I wouldn't wait another five years to find out if you're going to get one. Get more actively involved in the process now.
