Bosses

"Boss takes advantage"

Dear Andrea:

This may sound like a small thing but it is really getting to me. My boss has a habit of asking me to go out to the corner deli and get him a cup of their flavored coffee or cappuccino he likes better than the office kind. Sometimes, a meeting he is in will go long and he'll buzz me and ask me to bring in lunch. I don't mind doing this, but I shouldn't have to pay out of my pocket. With the coffee he will say, I'll pay you back. But he forgets. It's starting to add up. Should I just let this go by?

    --Administrative Assistance Going Too Far

Dear Administrative Assistance:

You need to set up a procedure for this. Take the lead by telling him you want to start a petty cash fund that covers last-minute lunches and other incidentals such as coffee. The next time he requests the fancy coffee, say, "Sure, I'll take that out of petty cash." This way you get him used to the system and if he wants, give him a chance to say, "Here's a couple bucks for the coffee."

If he's not open to this and you're sick of covering his coffee habit, you need to stand there and ask him to cough up the cash.
